Advancing age is one of the key risk factors for fractures, with an increased incidence of weakened bone structure and osteoporosis. The progression of frailty in older adults is linked to and characterised by weakness, slow walking speed, and a tendency to fall.
The intake of caffeinated coffee seems to be associated with lower odds of frailty.
- A 2025 study examined the relationship between coffee consumption and the development of frailty, concluding that habitual coffee consumption of > 4–6 and > 6 cups/day was associated with lower odds of frailty compared with consumption of > 0–2 cups/day9
- Similarly, a 2023 study in Chinese adults concluded that total daily caffeine intake at midlife was associated with reduced likelihood of frailty at late life in a dose-response relationship10
- A 2023 study of associations between coffee and frailty in older American adults also observed a substantial reduction in the risk of frailty at intakes of around 3 cups of caffeinated coffee a day. This association was not observed at higher intakes or with consumption of decaffeinated coffee11
