A review of associations of habitual and midlife coffee consumption with risk of frailty was undertaken as part of the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam.
Habitual coffee consumption of 4-6 cups per day was associated with lower odds of frailty compared with a consumption of 0-2 cups per day. The authors defined frailty as weight loss, weakness, exhaustion, slow walking speed, and low physical activity. Further research is required and possible underlying mechanisms should be considered23.. The authors suggest this observed effect of coffee consumption on reducing frailty may partly be attributed to the role of polyphenols in promoting muscle maintenance, potentially through regulating insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake.
