How coffee interacts with the gut-brain axis

New research led by Professor John Cryan, one of the world’s leading experts on the gut‑brain axis, reveals for the first time how coffee influences communication between the gut and the brain.

The study, published in Nature Communications and supported by the Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee (ISIC), explored how regular consumption of caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee affects the gut microbiome and psychological wellbeing. Conducted at University College Cork, this research provides new insight into the biological mechanisms connecting diet, gut microbes, and brain health, and suggests that coffee may have a role to play as part of a healthy, balanced diet.
