In Europe, cardiovascular disease – CVD – (principally coronary heart disease and stroke) is the main cause of death, accounting for 45% of all deaths (49% of all deaths in women and 40% of all deaths in men)73,74. Together, coronary heart disease (CHD) and cerebrovascular disease are the most common causes of CVD deaths, accounting for 1.8 million and 1.1 million deaths, respectively2.
Overall, CVD is estimated to cost the EU economy €210 billion every year. Of the total cost of CVD in the EU, around 53% are healthcare costs, 26% are productivity losses, and 21% are costs associated with informal care of people with CVD74.
