Facts and figures

Physical activity in Europe

  • In Europe physical inactivity is estimated to contribute to one million deaths (about 10 % of the total), per year1.
  • More than half of the population in Europe is not active enough to meet health recommendations1. Two thirds of the adult population in the European Union do not reach recommended levels of activity. On average, only 31% of respondents in a European survey reported sufficient physical activity1.
  • 41% of Europeans exercise or play sport at least once a week, whilst 59% ‘never or seldom do so’2. These figures have not changed substantially since 2009, but the proportion that ‘never exercises or plays sport’ has increased from 39% to 42%2.
