Researchers and clinicians have developed the first Europe-wide strategy for preventing type 2 diabetes, entitled Development and Implementation of a European Guideline and Training Standards for Diabetes Prevention (IMAGE). Final recommendations were released at the sixth World Congress on Prevention of Diabetes and its Complications on April 9. The IMAGE project is comprised largely of evidence-based guidelines, including defining and identifying at-risk individuals, preventing type 2 diabetes in those at risk, and supporting lifestyle changes through individual and group interventions. The researchers concluded that lifestyle modification was the most cost-effective method of diabetes prevention, with prevention plans to be based on government initiatives, community support, media communication, and private sector involvement.
